Exercise not only strengthens our bodies and makes us more robust but also allows us to experience the power of unity, enabling us to grow healthily and maturely through competition. The school's annual spring sports meet arrived as scheduled. Although the sky was overcast with continuous drizzle, the rain did nothing to diminish the students' enthusiasm and passion for sports.
For Class 4(2), this edition of the sports meet was remarkably fortunate. In the first five events, our class secured four first places and one second place. Coincidentally, the combination of these awards corresponds exactly to our class number, 4(2). At that moment, only one event remained: the obstacle relay race.
However, the only aspect I found unfair was the change in rules. Students in grades 1, 2, 3, and 5 were required to run around the obstacles, whereas for the fourth and sixth graders competing the next day, the school altered the format, requiring us to jump over the obstacles. For us, this was no longer a contest of speed; it was essentially a test of who could jump higher, faster, and more effectively.
With the sharp whistle blast of "Doo~~~", the race for the fourth graders began. Fortunately, the runners ahead of me were fast, quickly establishing a lead over the other classes. It was soon my turn. As I approached the obstacle, I realized it was nearly as high as my stomach.
I leaped with all my might. To my surprise, I successfully cleared the obstacle. However, on the return leg, while jumping over the second-to-last obstacle, my leg failed to bend in time, and I accidentally knocked the obstacle askew. Luckily, I did not fall.
Immediately after, a classmate fell at the same location. This setback caused us to fall behind the other classes, resulting in a second-place finish for us.
Watching the smug and dismissive looks from other classes, and facing the criticism from my own classmates, I reflected: only if we can Remain humble in victory and resilient in defeat will such sports meets truly hold meaning.
