Barry was born in Minnesota, USA, on August 29, 1948. Her father had only completed the second grade of elementary school, effectively making him illiterate, and earned a meager wage at a local feed mill. Her mother, who suffered from poor health throughout her life, was unable to care for the children and often told Barry to act like an older sibling and take care of herself. "I had to grow up fast," Barry recalled. By the age of three, she was already washing her own hair.
When Barry was six, her younger brother was born. This birth seemed to drain the last of her mother's vitality. Two years later, her mother passed away at the age of 28. At eight years old, Barry was forced to cook, clean, and look after her brother in addition to her studies. However, her father was often dissatisfied with her and would frequently beat her with a belt. After Barry's grandparents discovered the abuse, they petitioned the court for custody. Consequently, at the age of 12, Barry moved in with her grandmother along with her brother. Her grandmother was a pragmatic woman, and Barry learned from her to face life's difficulties with strength and resilience. By the age of 15, Barry was working at a local bank to help support the family.
