Wildlife scientist Sylvester Sorolla believes that every event in life offers us an opportunity to choose love and overcome fear. All the beautiful things in life are the result of choosing love. By love, I mean the innate joy, hope, and openness to spiritual pursuits that we are born with. Emotions rooted in fear include feeling inadequate, believing our accomplishments are not great enough, or accepting the societal notion that achievement comes from acquiring material things. However, deep down, we recognize that the meaning of life goes beyond this, and that inner yearning is a longing for love.
I once hosted a program featuring dialogue between victims and perpetrators. In one instance, a 17-year-old girl said to the person who had beaten her unrecognizable four years prior, leaving her for dead, “I do not hate you. I had to learn to forgive you so that I could go on living.” This is the most powerful force I have ever witnessed. In that moment, she expressed why we come into this world—to learn to love. We live to love, to learn love in the face of adversity or even death, and to understand how to cherish it. Consequently, as we go through experiences, we are more likely to view our world with compassion and to empathize with others out of love.
