Is it not a pleasure to learn and to practice what one has learned at regular intervals?
To review the old and thereby learn the new, one can be a teacher. To know what one does not know daily and not forget what one can do monthly is to be truly fond of learning. Without studying the Odes, one cannot speak properly. The Odes can inspire one, can allow one to observe the world, can foster social harmony, and can express grievances. In close proximity, they teach how to serve one's father; in broader contexts, they teach how to serve one's ruler; they also allow one to become well-versed in the names of birds, beasts, plants, and trees.
A person without constancy cannot serve as a shaman or physician. If one brings a gift of a bundle of dried meat, I have never failed to teach. Barbarians should not plot against the Chinese, nor should they disrupt Chinese culture; captives should not violate alliances, nor should troops press their advantages against those who are friendly. If the people are guided by politics and regulated by punishments, they will avoid crime but will have no sense of shame. If the people are guided by virtue and regulated by ritual, they will have a sense of shame and will correct themselves.
If the ruler loves ritual, the people will not dare to be disrespectful. If the ruler loves righteousness, the people will not dare to be disobedient. If the ruler loves trustworthiness, the people will not dare to be insincere.
